Dream Season Headed for Home – Cannister Could Clinch at New England Dragway

September 2, 2008 – Johnstown, Ohio – There are several reasons why the Kalbones Grill’n Sauce IHRA Alcohol Funny Car team is looking forward to this weekend’s Nitro Jam event in Epping, New Hampshire. One of those will be the change in racing conditions compared to previous events this season.

The weather forecast for the duration of the Amalie North American Nationals is calling for some cooler temperatures than what seems to have been following the tour over the course of the year. Tuner Dale Cannister, although very successful thus far on hot racetracks, would like to dig into other areas of the logbook. “We're hoping for some good air for a change!  Maybe we'll get it up there.  The track is usually excellent and if the air's good, we ought to lay down some really fast numbers.  And, not just us, but the whole field.  It will be nice if that happens since we've been racing in really tough conditions most of the season.  This is the time of year that everyone pulls out all the stops and tries to do their best in good air.”

Laurie Cannister, driver of Kevin and Wendy Sims’ Kalbones Grill’n Sauce Camaro, is just excited to get back to the Epping facility. “I have quite a few fans up there who remembered me even when I was just a crew person for the time I was out of the seat.  It's also a fun race for Dale and I because we have family in that area and it's always nice to see them when we're there.”

While the Kalbones’ team wasn’t able to have a good race weekend for Laurie’s birthday earlier this year, she’s hoping that will all change for their wedding anniversary with a good showing during this weekend’s race. That could also include locking up the 2008 IHRA AFC Championship. “Yes, we're hoping to clinch the championship this race; but we're still going to approach it the same way--one round at a time.  We are going to focus on making the most out of each qualifying session and winning each round.  We haven't varied from that mindset all season and we aren't stopping now.  The truth is:  if you stay focused, everything else will follow.”

It was just a year ago when Laurie and Dale received the phone call from Kevin and Wendy Sims that has now proved to change so much for the team that was formed as the outcome. The Kalbones’ team knew they had a good shot at being a contender at the start of the season, but having such an early lead in the points was a surprise to all, including Laurie. “I would have said that I would have hoped to finish in the top 5!  With it being a totally new team, Dale's first year of tuning, and my 5 years out of the seat, I don't think any of us expected to do as well as we have done.  We all hoped to, but realistically our goal was to be in the top 5!”

It very well could be history in the making for the Kalbones Grill’n Sauce team this weekend during the ninth stop on the 2008 IHRA Nitro Jam Tour. The Amalie North American Nationals at New England Dragway in Epping, New Hampshire will provide the stage for some fantastic racing action along with championship implications. The event is scheduled for September 5-7.
