J.R. Todd Ends Season In First Round At Rockingham
November 9, 2000
Rockingham, NC - J.R. Todd lost a tough battle of IHRA Top Fuel's
potential rookie of the year candidates. The 18-year old, driver for Bruce
Litton, lost a close first round match opposite of Clay Millican. The
Lawrenceburg, Ind.-based driver had the quicker reaction, but lost the
battle at the finish.
All was not lost for Todd, as the graduate from the junior dragster ranks
concluded his first season in the top ten of the points standings.
"I am plenty thankful for the opportunities that have been afforded
me," explained Todd, who writes a regular column in www.competitionplus.com.
"I really wanted to get the job done for Bruce by taking out Clay,
but we fell short. I know you can't win them all, but I really wanted this
one."
Todd began eliminations as the seventh quickest driver with a
4.888/298.27.
In the first round of eliminations, Todd tried to gain any advantage that
he could against the much-quicker Millican. He rolled into the beams and
deep-staged. The tactic worked for Todd as he was .038 quicker out of the
gate with a .459 light.
However, at the stripe, Millican was the first with a 4.754/320.28, while
Todd gave it a valiant effort with a 4.885/309.06.
Todd had an impressive season as he reached the finals of the CARQUEST
Northern Nationals in just his third race. He qualified in every outing to
highlight his performances.
"Maybe we'll do a lot better in 2001," explained Todd. "I
learned a lot this season and it's very evident that Bruce Litton is a
good teacher. We'll take some time off and rest, then we'll be back and
try to win the title."
