Heitzman graduates from Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School with Top Alcohol Dragster license
TOLEDO, Ohio – “Dyno” Dave Heitzman has experienced a multitude of emotions from the day it was announced that he’d be one of three drivers scheduled to take turns driving Quain Stott’s second Pro Modified entry. Heitzman, a longtime drag racer of motorcycles and dragsters, just didn’t feel the comfort level normally associated with driving a Pro Modified doorslammer after a session with Scotty Cannon as his instructor.
Maybe Pro Modifieds just didn’t run quick enough. Realistically time just ran out on his licensing venture because Cannon had to depart Valdosta, Ga., prematurely in order to prepare for the IHRA season-opener in San Antonio, Texas.
"If I would have had just two more days, I could have delivered a driver," Cannon said.
"The time I spent with him was second to none," Heitzman said. "A vote of confidence coming from a legend like Scotty means the world. I want to thank him for his time which I know at the time was very hard to come by."
Heitzman decided to travel in a new direction and made a trip to Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School where he attained his Top Alcohol Dragster license in one day. One of the prevalent attributes for Heitzman was repeatability and that led to the quickest and fastest run of his career.
Heitzman made eighth-mile passes in the 3.80s culminating with a 5.94 quarter-mile elapsed time at over 230 miles per hour.
“The lessons taught by Frank were far more than just the passes going down the track,” Heitzman said. “He taught me in areas of physical and mental attributes of being a driver.
His crew and his personality are second to none. This is how a drag racing school is supposed to run.”
Heitzman’s driving plans are undecided as of this moment.
