IHRA and Sonny’s Racing Engines announced the creation of the Sonny’s IHRA Pro Stock 220 MPH Club for Torco Pro Stock at the Amalie Oil North American Nationals at New England Dragway this past weekend.
The club, which honors the first 16 drivers who make official 220 mph runs during official IHRA competition, already has its first two members. Frank Gugliotta (Mt. Airy, Md.) became the first member of the club when he clocked a pass of 220.26 mph during the first round of eliminations. Steve Spiess (Manhattan, Ill.) became the second member of the club when he ran 220.04 mph during his first round elimination race.
For becoming the first member of the club, Gugliotta receives $1,500, a special jacket, ring, and plaque commemorating the event. Spiess receives $1,000, a special jacket, ring, and plaque. Members 3-16 will receive $500, a special jacket, ring, and plaque. All 16 rings will be awarded after the club is completed.
“We created this club because we recognize that the teams and drivers have raised the competitive bar in Torco Pro Stock,” said IHRA Director of Competition Mike Baker. “It’s a testament to not only the drivers, but the tuners and the crew chiefs that have furthered the class. I don’t think from last season to this season people realized the jump in ETs and speeds that these cars would be making.”
Leonard, whose relationship with IHRA Torco Pro Stock racing goes back several years, echoed Baker’s sentiments. “Torco Pro Stock has become one of the most exciting classes in all of IHRA drag racing. With the speeds that these cars are now running, with each barrier pushing the limit of performance, we felt that we had to spearhead the formation of this club.”
Participants must display the selected decal on both sides of the entry in prominent location to be eligible.
