Regulations and Specifications


2006 Top Stock Events | HP factors updated 012/29/05

The requirements for IHRA Top Stock are the same as those for Stock Eliminator with the following exceptions. Contact the IHRA Technical Department for additional information.

CLASS ELIGIBILITY: Cars accepted in the IHRA rule book as legal Class A, or higher class Stock Eliminator cars are eligible for Top Stock. No station wagons or 4 door vehicles will be approved for Top Stock. The weight break is 8.60 pounds, INCLUDING THE DRIVER, per factored horsepower. Note that the Top Stock Horsepower Committee may establish horsepower factors that are not the same as IHRA or NHRA. Certain Crate Motors will be accepted in Top Stock. (See "SPECIFIC RULES PERTAINING TO CRATE MOTORS" and "ACCEPTED CRATE MOTORS FOR COMPETITION IN Top Stock.") Any other rules not modified below will remain in effect as defined in the current IHRA Rulebook for the car's natural class in Stock Eliminator.

ENGINE PARTS SUBSTITUTIONS:
A. Various exceptions to OEM combinations have been made in the interest of permitting some cars to meet the minimum weight standard for Top Stock. The following substitutions may be used in the following applications. Various changes not listed below have been implemented. See Top Stock engine specifications located in the tech section of the ihra.com for additional information.

1) 1968-1970 Chevrolet Nova, Chevelle, and 67-70 Camaro running the 396/375 and 427/ 425 engine may use the same approved aluminum cylinder head as the 68-69 Camaro (Casting numbers: 3919842 and 12363401)

2) Any year Cobra Jet Ford may run an approved Ford aluminum intake manifold. (Casting numbers: CFAE-AA, C6AE-K, C6AE-J, C6AE-H, C7AE-F, C7AE-C, C7AE-F, And C7AE-C.

3) Any year Street Hemi may run approved aluminum replacement cylinder heads. (Casting number: 253110-M)
4) Casting # 60589 Pontiac Intake Valve 2.11" Exhaust Valve 1.66" 65cc Combustion chamber Intake: # 7156 Edelbrock
5) The cylinder heads for use on the 440 Cubic Inch Engines in Top Stock are:
• Mopar Performance Part Number P4876311
• Mopar Performance Casting Number P4532796 In 2.14” Ex. 1.81”
• Indy 440-SR – In 2.19 Ex. 1.81
• Camshaft - .530 lift update
6) The cylinder head for use on the 360 Cubic Inch Crate Engine is:
Edelbrock Performer RPM Magnum (Part number 61779)
B. An exception to the existing rules has been made in the interest of reducing parts breakage, and extending engine life for all engine combinations. Any accepted OEM engine combination or accepted Crate Motor combination may use OEM ratio "roller rocker arms." (with polylocks only, no stud girdles). Shaft mounted rocker systems permitted.

CARBURETOR: 750 cfm maximum on all small blocks. 850 cfm maximum on all big blocks. OEM design mandatory with choke plate in place mandatory. The use of 90mm throttle body on fuel injection applications is permitted.(Total for a single or dual application)

CAMSHAFT: All entries may use mechanical roller design. Camshaft specifications must be IHRA approved on all combinations.

CYLINDER HEADS: Porting and polishing of intake and exhaust runners permitted. OEM valve location mandatory. Combustion chamber modifications prohibited. Super Stock style ports are permitted. Super Stock Intake and Exhaust runner volumes must be maintained. Crate motor volumes will be published as they become available. All other modifications prohibited. The use of Titanium valve spring retainers and keepers are permitted.

DRIVERS RESTRAINT: SFI 16.1 harness mandatory.

FIRE JACKET:
SFI 3.2A-5 suit mandatory( jacket and pants) and neck collar meeting SFI 3.3.

HOOD: All entries may utilize IHRA accepted aftermarket 2 inch cowl hoods,or factory accepted hoods, for carburetor clearance.

INTAKE MANIFOLD: Porting and polishing permitted. Plenum modifications beyond polishing prohibited. All entries may use aftermarket manifolds as per crate motor specifications. The use of sheet metal manifolds is permitted and those using such manifolds with also be assed + 10 HP to their combination. All manifolds must be IHRA accepted prior to competition.
Ignition System: The use of crank triggers are permitted on all applications. The use of DATA LOGGERS are permitted provided they in no way effect the on track performance of the vehicle and do not transmit data to an alternate location.

PISTONS: Super Stock ring type and locations for pistons permitted. The top compression ring must be a minimum of .065 below the deck of the piston on all combinations. Must maintain OEM compression ratio and valve pocket location. IHRA approval mandatory.

OIL PAN: All pans must have a removable plate that seals a 2 square inch opening in the side of the oil pan that will facilitate the inspection process. This will include the ability to see the connecting rod or at the least be able to verify, by use of a magnet tool or borascope, the material of the connecting rod.The use of an ACCUSUMP is permitted.

ROLLCAGE: Mandatory on all entries. (8 point minimum) SFI 27.1 Window Net mandatory.

DRIVERS SEAT: Aftermarket upholstered after market racing seat permitted.

TRANSMISSIONS:
Any transmission accepted as legal in the car's natural class for the year engine, make and model may be used. Either stick or automatic transmissions are eligible. Stick shift entries may deduct 25 lbs from minimum weight. Automatic transmission must utilize SFI 4.1 transmission shield. Automatic transmissions are also allowed the ues of E-Shift,or electric controlled solenoid shifters, the use of air shifters is prohibited.

TIRES: Maximum width (new) is 10.5 inches with a maximum circumference of 98 inches.

WEIGHT: Any car in Top Stock is permitted to remove the passenger seat and/or front battery to meet minimum weight. Removal of the alternator is permitted. Fiberglass replicas of the original hood permitted. Use of hood pins or Dzus fasteners are acceptable as replacement for original hood hardware. Hood must be painted to match the color combination of the car. Cars using only one battery are allowed to move it to the trunk in accordance with the IHRA rule book. Cars adding weight must do so in accordance with the IHRA rule book.

STARTING SYSTEM: Competition will be conducted using a five tenths(.500) PRO TREE. Staging procedures will be in accordance with the rules of all IHRA classes currently using the Pro Tree System. For example, BOTH CARS MUST PRE-STAGE BEFORE EITHER CAR MAY STAGE. DEEP STAGING IS PROHIBITED. TOP STOCK WILL BE RUN HEADS-UP WITH NO BREAKOUT.

SCALES: All cars will cross the scales after EACH qualifying and/or elimination run. Deliberate failure to weigh after each run will be grounds for disqualification. Instances of failure to weigh due to breakage will be evaluated at the discretion of the Event Director.

FUEL/FUEL CHECK: Only IHRA accepted fuels will be allowed for competition. Use of any other fuel is grounds for permanent disqualification! All cars will submit to fuel check BEFORE and/or AFTER any qualifying and/or elimination run. At the discretion of the Tech Director, fuel samples may be taken directly at the carburetor inlet. Fuel samples may be held at the discretion of the Tech Director for further post-event chemical analysis. Deliberate failure to stop at fuel check after each run or when directed by the Tech Director will be grounds for disqualification. Instances of failure to complete fuel check due to breakage will be evaluated by the Top Stock Tech Director.

PAIRINGS/LADDER/LANE CHOICE: Top Stock pairings will be run using a SPORTSMAN LADDER in accordance with the IHRA rule book. Lane choice for first round will be awarded by qualified position. After first round, lane choice goes to low ET of the prior round. In the event of identical (to three decimal places, i.e; .000) prior round ET's, the car with the greatest Top Speed will have lane choice. In the event of utilizing a FAST LOSER format, lane choice will be awarded to the winning entry the fast loser is paired against.

POINTS: Points will be awarded to the specific team. In order for the vehicle to be eligible for the MIR shootout, the vehicle must have participated at a minimum of 6 (six) TOP STOCK events during the year. Bonus points will be awarded to the top 8 (eight) qualifiers at each event. Example : #1 receives 8 bonus points, #2 receives 7 bonus points,etc.

TOW VEHICLES: permitted. Full size tow vehicles prohibited.

TEARDOWN: Cars may be randomly selected for teardown at any time. THIS RULE IS INCLUSIVE OF THE WINNER AND RUNNER UP. IHRA Technical Guidelines will be the standard for determining the legality of any car. During and following teardown, decisions of the Technical Department will be final.

HORSEPOWER FACTORING: Top Stock horsepower ratings will be more closely monitored than any other category because of great concern over the possibility of performance advantages being established by one combination all others. Anything not specifically stated as permitted in the IHRA Top Stock section, IHRA rulebook, or Drag Review is prohibited.

UNFORESEEN DISPUTES: ANY UNFORESEEN DISPUTES WILL BE RESOLVED BY THE TOP STOCK EVENT DIRECTOR. DECISIONS MADE BY THE EVENT DIRECTOR WILL BE CONSIDERED FINAL. NO EXCEPTIONS.

SPECIFIC RULES PERTAINING TO CRATE MOTORS:

Specified Crate Motors will be accepted in Top Stock. One small block and one big block crate motor from each manufacturer has been accepted for use in competition. The current list of accepted Crate Motors and their accepted corresponding body styles are listed below. Any Crate Motors not listed below are not legal for competition in Top Stock at this time. All Crate Motors are required to meet IHRA accepted manufacturer technical specifications in the same manner as a conventional Stock Eliminator engine.

Any rules not defined herein will remain as written in the IHRA rule book for Crate Motor usage in Stock Eliminator.
